It takes a comprehensive approach and a backpack full of resources to fight that evil villain, POVERTY. This activity will assist up to 48 participants in developing key strategies for improving collaboration in your community. It will assist participants in building communication and relationship skills with people struggling in the crisis of poverty. Participants will have opportunities to “feel” what it might be like to be in the shoes of someone living in poverty.

 The core learning objectives for the activity are to:
  • Increase understanding of how verbal and non-verbal communication impacts people living in poverty
  • Enhance skills for avoiding labeling and judgment of people living in poverty
  • Improve understanding of the relationship and content levels in all communication
  • Develop knowledge of power dynamics in cross-class relationships.
Materials:
  • 12 plastic bags of 6 uniquely-identified statements (labels) printed on card stock. Each statement has holes punched in the upper right and left hand of the card.
  • Elastic bands placed over the head will hold the labels in place above the forehead.
